Unchecked ambition can be a dangerous thing in music. Former Cop Shoot Cop collaborator and film score merchant JF Coleman is Phylr (pronounced 'filler', presumably) and this is his sprawling first release. There's barely a musical genre into which Half Life doesn't dip, swinging wildly as it does between film soundtracks, electro, drum 'n' bass, atmospherics, hip hop and more. This, and the fact that Coleman invited a host of his musical mates into the studio, almost inevitably results in a patchy, messy, uncohesive album that can't decide what it wants to be or where it wants to go. Half Life has its moments, but they aren't half thin on the ground.
