The Quiet Party

By Miles Hawthorn

Avant-garde hip hop remixes on show here, with Warp stars Antipop Consortium headlining. Madlib (in his Yesterday's New Quintet guise) turns his hand to Playing Parties, opening with the sound of a lighter drawing smoke through a bong, which appropriately slides into smoky laidback instrumental hip hop. There is a nice bonus beats track too that introduces a p-funk twist. High Priest tackles Muggle Born, a bouncing jam with sharp rhymes and beats. The next couple of tracks are versions of Girls, which don't really hit the spot for me, sounding too much like Will Smith or Jay-Z. There is another track which sounds like it cheekily samples The Cure Lets Go To Bed, but the Antipop reworks are the best on here for me.
